Creepy yet captivating, this chapel before you is quite unlike any other. This is the Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa. Its walls tell a silent story through an intricate mosaic of human bones.

San Bernardino alle Ossa is more than just a church. It is a meditation on life, death and the passage of time. It is located close to the Duomo. Yet, it offers a stark contrast to the Duomo’s grandeur.

Let’s step back in time. We go to the 12th century when Milan was growing rapidly. The adjacent cemetery couldn’t keep up with the number of deceased. In 1210, a chamber was built to house the bones. A church was added in 1269. This marked the humble beginnings of San Bernardino alle Ossa.

Centuries passed. The church underwent renovations. In the 17th century, Giovanni Andrea Biffi transformed the ossuary. Skulls and tibiae were incorporated into the wall decorations. This macabre display served a dual purpose. It was religious veneration. It was philosophical reflection on mortality.

In 1712, disaster struck. A fire ravaged the church. Reconstruction began swiftly. Carlo Giuseppe Merlo expanded the church in Baroque style. By 1776, the facade was complete, giving San Bernardino alle Ossa its current appearance.

Now, let’s focus on the ossuary. Pass through the narrow corridor. Prepare to be amazed. The interior walls are adorned with thousands of bones. Niches and pillars display skulls. Femurs embellish doorways. The bones came from the original ossuary. They also came from suppressed cemeteries.

Look up. The vault is frescoed with Sebastiano Ricci’s masterpiece. Painted in 1695, “Triumph of Souls in a Flight of Angels” depicts angels in yellow and gold. The Virgin Mary and other saints grace the corners.

Above the marble altar stands Our Lady of Sorrows. Gerolamo Cattaneo created this statue in the 17th century. She kneels beside the dead Christ. Her black cloak is embroidered with gold.

Many believe the bones belonged to Christian martyrs killed by Arian heretics. But they were patients from the Brolo Hospital. They were executed prisoners. They were members of aristocratic families.

King John V of Portugal was deeply moved by this chapel in 1738. He replicated it in Évora, near Lisbon. It’s now known as Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones.

San Bernardino alle Ossa is more than a curiosity. It is a place for spiritual contemplation. It reflects the Catholic belief in the soul’s triumph over death.

Before we leave, consider this. San Bernardino alle Ossa invites us to confront our mortality. It reminds us of the countless lives that came before. It is a unique and unforgettable experience. A testament to Milan’s rich history. A place where art, faith and mortality intertwine.
