How does a king mourn? The Cappella Espiatoria stands before us. It is a powerful answer to a tragic event. This is no ordinary chapel. The Cappella Espiatoria marks a site of profound historical weight.
King Vittorio Emanuele III commissioned this monument. It was to honor his father Umberto I. Umberto I was assassinated here on July 29 1900. The assassin was Gaetano Bresci. He was an anarchist.
The Cappella Espiatoria is both a crypt and a chapel. A stele rises above them. Giuseppe Sacconi began the design. He also designed Umberto I’s tomb at the Pantheon. Sacconi also designed the Altare della Patria in Rome. Sacconi died in 1905 before finishing this work. Guido Cirilli completed it in July 1910. He transformed Sacconi’s original design somewhat.
Notice the artistic gate at the entrance. Alessandro Mazzucotelli designed it. Behind the chapel, observe the large exedra. It is covered in a two-tone pebble mosaic.
Let us talk about the Cappella Espiatoria building itself. It is at the heart of a large park. The Cappella Espiatoria includes a crypt. This crypt features mosaics and precious marbles. Above, the chapel is also covered entirely in mosaic decorations. Above the Cappella Espiatoria chapel soars a 35-meter-high obelisk. It is made of Oggiono stone. It rests on a circular base. Ludovico Pogliaghi created the bronze sculpture of the Pietà. It decorates the base. The top holds a bronze cushion. On it are symbols of the Royal family. These include a sceptre, the Annunziata collar and the Savoy crown.
Step inside the Cappella Espiatoria crypt. It has a Greek cross shape. Precious mosaics cover the interior. They depict a star-dotted sky. Savoy house emblems also adorn it. Bronze crowns are here too. People sent them from around the world. They honored the dead king. In the center, see the black marble memorial stone. It marks the exact spot of the assassination.
The chapel is equally impressive. Glass mosaics portray angels. Busts of Savoy dynasty saints decorate the chapel. The Risen Christ with open arms is on the background. The floor has colored ancient marble.
The Cappella Espiatoria serves as a testament to grief. It is a place of memory. It is a reminder of a pivotal moment in Italian history. Consider the weight of history. Think about the artistic beauty. The Cappella Espiatoria stands as a silent witness. It remembers a king and a nation’s sorrow.
