Was Miami Central Senior High School always destined for the stars? Standing before its modern facade, it’s hard to imagine the school’s humble beginnings and its roller coaster journey to academic success. Founded in 1959 in the heart of Miami-Dade County, Miami Central Senior High School embraced the spirit of its time. The school’s colors, green and white, and its mascot, the Rockets, were chosen as a tribute to the burgeoning space program spearheaded by NASA. This choice reflects the optimistic zeitgeist of the late 50s, a time when anything seemed possible. The school quickly became a hub for the community, drawing students from the northern fringes of Miami, as well as parts of North Miami, Opa-locka, Miami Shores, and El Portal. However, Miami Central Senior High School, like a rocket battling gravity, faced its own set of challenges. By the early 21st century, it was grappling with issues such as low academic performance and chronic truancy. Yet, amidst these struggles, the school’s spirit remained unbroken. In a dramatic turn of events, Miami Central Senior High School was selected to receive a School Improvement Grant, part of the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009. This grant, championed by President Barack Obama, who even visited the school, breathed new life into Miami Central. Today, Miami Central Senior High School serves as a testament to resilience, a beacon of hope echoing its own inspiring motto: “Ad astra per aspera” – to the stars through adversity.
