What happened to Lemon City? You might be wondering, as you stand here, in the vibrant neighborhood now known as Little Haiti. The Lemon City Branch Library, right in front of us, holds the secret. This isn’t just any library. It’s a survivor, a witness to the passage of time and the transformation of a community. Lemon City Library is the oldest library in the entire Miami-Dade Public Library System. Think back to 1894. Lemon City was a much smaller community then. A group of determined women decided their town needed a reading room. They set up shop in Cornelia Keyes’ cottage. Can you imagine the excitement when the first dedicated library building, a charming wooden structure, opened in 1902? Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate and philanthropist, even donated some of his own books to the collection. For decades, the Lemon City Library flourished, nurtured by dedicated volunteers. Even as Lemon City was absorbed into the growing city of Miami, the library remained a beloved landmark. In 1942, it became part of the Miami Public Library. Today, the Lemon City Branch Library, though temporarily closed for renovations, stands as a testament to the power of community, the love of reading, and the enduring spirit of a neighborhood that refuses to be forgotten.
