Why is a mythical creature standing proudly in the middle of Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus? That, my friends, is Sagitaro (Centauro). This magnificent bronze statue, standing tall at 12 feet, depicts a centaur, a creature from Greek mythology. The centaur, half-man and half-horse, embodies a unique blend of strength and wisdom.
The Sagitaro statue is the creation of the late Dominican artist BenjamÃnsa, whose works are showcased in collections worldwide. This particular piece was generously donated to the Kendall Campus by Armando J. Bucelo Jr., a respected Coral Gables attorney and a proud alumnus of the college. Bucelo saw Sagitaro (Centauro) as a symbol of gratitude towards the institution that played a crucial role in his personal and professional journey.
Today, Sagitaro stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring allure of mythological tales. As you admire the Sagitaro statue, take a moment to appreciate its intricate details. Notice the powerful stance of the centaur, the tension in its bowstring, and the wisdom etched on its face. It’s more than just a statue; it’s a piece of art that seamlessly blends mythology, artistry, and philanthropy, standing as a proud symbol on the Kendall Campus.
