Is Key Biscayne truly an “Island Paradise” as its motto proclaims? Well, let’s just say its journey has been anything but straightforward. Key Biscayne has a long and fascinating history. It stretches back to the Tequesta Indians and passes through Spanish conquistadors, ambitious developers, and even a U.S. president. Juan Ponce de León first charted Key Biscayne in 1513, naming it Santa Marta. He even noted a freshwater spring on the island.
Centuries later, in 1821, Key Biscayne became part of the United States. This transition brought the construction of the iconic Cape Florida Lighthouse in 1825. The lighthouse, however, became a target during the Second Seminole War, attacked and burned in 1836. The island transformed into a military post, Fort Russell, as tensions with the Seminoles escalated.

Key Biscayne’s allure as a potential tropical paradise emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Yet, disputes over land ownership and the devastating impact of the 1926 hurricane hampered these dreams. The island finally saw residential development in the 1950s with the construction of the Rickenbacker Causeway. Key Biscayne even housed a president. Richard Nixon purchased a compound here in 1969, often referred to as the “Florida White House.” He sought solace on Key Biscayne during the unraveling Watergate scandal.

Today, Key Biscayne stands as a testament to its resilient spirit. It boasts beautiful beaches, lush parks, and a vibrant community. The island certainly lives up to its “Island Paradise” nickname, even if the path to achieving that status was paved with challenges.
