What did Mr. Kiyoshi Ichimura, the founder of Ricoh Corporation, and a Miami city commissioner talk about in 1957? They discussed the possibility of creating a beautiful Japanese garden. You might be surprised to know that this conversation led to the creation of the Ichimura Miami Japanese Garden. The Ichimura Miami Japanese Garden is a testament to one man’s vision and generosity. In 1957, Mr. Ichimura was captivated by Miami’s beauty during a visit. He envisioned a serene space adorned with cherry trees and lanterns. He shared this idea with a city commissioner, offering to donate the trees. While cherry trees proved unsuitable for Miami’s climate, Mr. Ichimura’s commitment remained strong. He gifted 300 orchid trees, a magnificent stone lantern, and a Hotei statue to the city. He even sent skilled Japanese carpenters and gardeners to ensure the garden’s authenticity. Completed in 1961, the garden, initially named “SAN-AI-EN” (“Three Loves Garden”), reflected Mr. Ichimura’s desire to foster friendship between the United States and Japan. The garden’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Years of neglect, a devastating hurricane, and relocation tested its resilience. Yet, each time, the Ichimura Miami Japanese Garden was restored thanks to the dedication of the Friends of the Japanese Garden and the support of Ricoh Corporation. This garden stands as a symbol of enduring beauty and international friendship. It reminds us of the power of one person’s vision to create something truly special.
