You might be surprised to know that this conversation led to the creation of the Ichimura Miami Japanese Garden. The Ichimura Miami Japanese Garden is a testament to one man’s vision and generosity. In 1957, Mr. Ichimura was captivated by Miami’s beauty during a visit. He envisioned a serene space adorned with cherry trees and lanterns. He shared this idea with a city commissioner, offering to donate the trees. While cherry trees proved unsuitable for Miami’s climate, Mr. Ichimura’s commitment remained strong. He gifted 300 orchid trees, a magnificent stone lantern, and a Hotei statue to the city. He even sent skilled Japanese carpenters and gardeners to ensure the garden’s authenticity. Completed in 1961, the garden, initially named “SAN-AI-EN” (“Three Loves Garden”), reflected Mr. Ichimura’s desire to foster friendship between the United States and Japan. The garden’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Years of neglect, a devastating hurricane, and relocation tested its resilience.
