Clutching the worn map of Antalya, I traced my finger along the Aksu River, until it rested on a small, unassuming mark – Solak. Solak, a name that echoed with a history far richer than its quiet presence suggested. Solak village whispers tales of the Yörük Turkmen, nomadic communities who migrated from the mountain villages of Manavgat and its surrounding areas. They were drawn to this fertile land, initially abundant with water, hence the original name, “Sulak,” meaning “wet” or “marshy.” Situated on the left side of the road leading to Alanya, it eventually became known as Solak, meaning “left.” Solak wasn’t always a settled village. It began as a haven for migrating communities, specifically the Saçkaralı and Sarıkeçili Yörüks, who sought pasture for their flocks. Over time, these nomadic shepherds transitioned to farming, laying the foundations for the Solak we see today. Though not as ancient as some settlements, Solak’s transformation from wandering shepherds to a farming community is a story in itself. Located a mere 21 kilometers from Antalya and 18 kilometers from Serik, Solak is nestled on the easternmost edge of Aksu district, flanking the Aksu River. Imagine the Yörüks arriving here, their flocks spread across the fertile plains, the river a lifeline for their animals and their nascent farming endeavors. The village is embraced by a verdant landscape, bordered by Yukarıkocayatak and Abdurrahmanlar to the east, Dumanlar to the north, and Boztepe to the south. To the west lies Aksu, a connection to the wider world. This close proximity to Aksu is further emphasized by Solak’s inclusion within the old Aksu bridge boundaries. This little village, once a watery haven for shepherds, holds within its quiet streets the echoes of a nomadic past, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Yörük Turkmen.
