It all began modestly in 1950. The Lowe Art Museum was initially nestled within the University of Miami’s brand-new Merrick Classroom Building. It was Miami’s first professional art space, known then as the “University Art Gallery”. Just a year later, Joe and Emily Lowe, prominent Miami philanthropists, made a generous donation. Their gift made it possible to construct a dedicated building for the art gallery on the University of Miami’s campus. This new “Lowe Art Gallery”, as it was then called, officially opened its doors on February 4, 1952. Over time, the Lowe Art Museum has expanded significantly. Today, it boasts a diverse collection of over 19,500 objects, showcasing 5,000 years of human artistry from every corner of the globe. The museum achieved a significant milestone in 1972 by becoming the first in Miami-Dade County to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. This recognition solidified its place as a true leader in the art world.
