Three hundred and fifteen pounds. That’s how much the Archdiocese of Melbourne paid in 1929 for the land where St John the Evangelist Church now stands. A hefty sum then. Imagine the negotiations. The weight of history on that plot of land.
St John the Evangelist Church in East Melbourne isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the growth of Melbourne’s Catholic community. Its story begins long before its current red-brick form. Before this striking structure stood the Anglican Parish Church of the Holy Trinity. This church served the community as a place of worship and a school.
In 1866 a small Gothic-style Catholic church was built. It became the first Catholic church in East Melbourne. Named for St John the Evangelist it started small. It served a growing community. It was a beacon of faith in a developing city.
A larger Romanesque-style church followed in 1901. This new building reflected the community’s predominantly Irish heritage. Think Celtic crosses and artistic flourishes. It was a powerful symbol of community and faith.
Then came the current church completed in 1930. Archbishop Daniel Mannix laid the foundation stone. This red-brick building stands proudly today. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith.
The church’s history isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about people. It’s about the Sisters of Charity who founded its school in 1890. Generations of local children received an education there. The school provided more than just lessons. It fostered a sense of community and belonging.
Father Joe Bui Duc Tien was another significant figure. He was the first Vietnamese refugee ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. He served as parish priest from 1992 to 2006. He left a lasting impact. His legacy is woven into the fabric of St John’s.
In 2008 St John’s became part of St Patrick’s Cathedral Parish. It reconnected with its roots. It strengthened its ties to the broader Catholic community. This church stands as a reminder of faith hope and community. It is a rich history for the community.
The St John the Evangelist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant part of Melbourne’s history. It’s a place where stories are told and faith is celebrated. It’s a place that continues to evolve. It serves the community in new and meaningful ways.
