Have you ever felt the urge to thank a higher power for a miraculous escape? The Wallfahrtskirche Baitenhausen stands as a testament to such gratitude. Right before you stands this beautiful Baroque church perched high above Baitenhausen a district of Meersburg.

The Wallfahrtskirche Baitenhausen is more than just a pretty building. It’s a living monument. Prince-Bishop Marquard Rudolf von Rodt had it built. He wanted to thank God for saving him from a terrible storm on Lake Constance. His coat of arms and the year 1702 above the entrance are reminders of this. The church was consecrated in 1704. Construction continued intensely under his nephew Franz Konrad von Rodt between 1750 and 1775.

The Wallfahrtskirche Baitenhausen boasts stunning details. Notice the magnificent frescoes by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner. They date back to 1760. These paintings depict the Prince-Bishop’s dramatic rescue on Lake Constance. One shows his perilous journey from Konstanz to Meersburg. The other shows him choosing the perfect spot for the church. He’s standing on a hill overlooking Baitenhausen. Notice how a threatening storm disappears thanks to Mary’s intercession. The sun shines brightly. Meersburg is shown as it looked around 1750.

Look closely. The church has four altars. The high altar features a statue of the Virgin Mary before a radiant yellow window. Above it the Holy Spirit and a star representing “Maris stella” sea star. The Wendelin altar on the right features a wooden image of the saint. Next to it is the Holy Cross altar with a cross orb and the symbol of God. This altar has an opening revealing the Wendelin chapel behind. The Joseph altar on the left features a statue of St Joseph.

The Wallfahrtskirche Baitenhausen is not just about its grand history. It’s also about its ongoing life. Two important days mark the pilgrimage calendar. These are the Wendelin’s Day on October 20 and the Scapular Feast on the second Sunday of July. This feast is in honor of the Carmelite Order who helped the church in earlier days. It also reminds us of the Scapular a piece of clothing for monks that became a symbol of Mary’s protective mantle.

During the harvest festival the altar is decorated with fruits seeds and vegetables from Baitenhausen. The church is a true community treasure. It also houses a small organ built in 1768. This instrument has been restored over the years. An eternal light is a gift from Therese-Louise Freifrau Droste zu Hülshoff. She was the mother of the famous poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. They occasionally visited Meersburg Castle. The three bells in the wooden bell tower have their own history. The larger two cast in 1973. The smallest bell from 1617 by Eronimus Gesus of Konstanz.

The Wallfahrtskirche Baitenhausen isn’t just a building. It is a living story of faith devotion and community. A story that continues to unfold each time the bells ring.
