A whisper of history. A scent of sanctity. This is Masjid al-Nabawi. The Prophet’s Mosque.

The Prophet’s Mosque stands as a beacon of faith. It’s the second holiest site in Islam. Built by the Prophet Muhammad himself it holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. It was initially a simple structure. Later rulers expanded and embellished it. The mosque became more than a place of worship. It was a community center a court of law and a religious school.

Imagine Muhammad. He’s involved in the construction. Two young orphans Sahl and Suhayl owned the land. They offered it as a gift. Muhammad insisted on paying. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari paid the price for the land. He also sheltered Muhammad upon his arrival in Medina.

The mosque was originally an open-air space. It had a raised platform a minbar. Muhammad delivered Friday sermons there. The Quran was taught here. Over time it evolved. Subsequent rulers expanded the mosque. They added their names to the walls. The doors and minarets were also named after them.

After an expansion under Caliph al-Walid I. The mosque includes the tombs of Muhammad. Abu Bakr and Umar are also buried here. The Green Dome marks Muhammad’s final resting place. It sits in the southeast corner of the mosque. Originally it was Aisha’s house.

In 1909. It became the first place in Arabia to have electric lights. For centuries eunuchs guarded the mosque. The last guardians were photographed. In 2015 only five remained. The mosque is usually open. It only closed once in modern times during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mosque has evolved over centuries. From a simple open-air structure. To the magnificent complex it is today. It has served as a vital center. For spiritual learning and community life. It continues to inspire awe. And devotion among millions of pilgrims. It stands as a testament. To the enduring legacy of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Green Dome glows. A symbol of faith. A reminder of the spiritual heart of Medina. The Prophet’s Mosque. A site you will never forget.
