Whispers of dissent. That’s how the story of Masjid Al Dira begins. Right here in Medina, near the revered Quba Mosque, a structure of discord once stood. Masjid Al Dira, the Mosque of Dissent. It was built by hypocrites, their intentions cloaked in deceit. They claimed it was a sanctuary for the sick and needy, a refuge from the harsh weather. But their true purpose, as revealed by divine intervention, was far more sinister. They sought to divide the Muslim community, to undermine the Prophet Muhammad’s message of unity. Abu ‘Amir, a Christian monk who opposed Islam, urged his followers to build this mosque. He promised them an army from the Byzantine Empire, led by himself, to expel the Prophet from Medina. Masjid Al Dira was to be their stronghold, a base for their treacherous plot. They invited the Prophet to pray there, hoping to gain his approval and legitimize their scheme. The Prophet initially agreed, but upon returning from the Tabuk expedition, he received a divine revelation. The revelation exposed the hypocrites’ true intentions, their lies and treachery. The Quran, in verses 9:107 and 9:110, condemns Masjid Al Dira as a place of mischief and infidelity. It was built to disunite the believers. Upon receiving this revelation, the Prophet Muhammad ordered the mosque’s destruction. Malik b. al-Dukhshum and Ma’n b. ‘Adi were dispatched to carry out this command. They set fire to Masjid Al Dira, its flames consuming the symbol of dissent. The hypocrites’ plot was foiled. The story of Masjid Al Dira serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hypocrisy and division. It highlights the importance of unity and loyalty within the Muslim community. It is a story of how truth prevails over deceit.
