“A city of light,” whispered a voice behind me, and I turned to see an old man, his eyes twinkling as he gestured towards Masjid Al-Fath. Masjid Al-Fath stands as a silent witness to the Battle of Ahzab. It’s the largest of the Seven Mosques. It sits atop a hill near Sal’ mountain, a strategic vantage point during the Prophet’s time. The original structure, built by Umar ibn Abd Al-Aziz between 705 and 711 CE, has been rebuilt and renovated over centuries. Imagine the scene in 1851, as Ottoman Sultan Abd Al-Majid I oversaw its latest transformation. The mosque you see today, with its almost square shape, a covered hall to the south, and a courtyard to the north, is a result of this rich history. Masjid Al-Fath isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a monument to resilience, a beacon of faith amidst the trials of war. As you ascend the substantial flight of stairs to the entrance on the eastern wall, take a moment to visualize the armies of Quraysh and their allies advancing toward Medina. Picture the Muslim defenders stationed at this very spot. They stood firm, their faith unwavering. The name “Al-Fath” means “victory,” a testament to the Muslims’ triumph in that crucial battle. Masjid Al-Fath, along with the other six mosques—Salman Al-Farsi, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, Umar bin Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib, and Fatimah Az-Zahra—formed a vital line of defense for Medina. While originally seven, one mosque was sadly demolished. These mosques, situated near the trench dug by Muslims to protect Medina, are more than just structures of brick and stone. They’re living testaments to a pivotal moment in Islamic history. They embody the spirit of faith, strategy, and courage. Although pictures are permitted, it is advisable to refrain from entering if you are not Muslim. The sanctity of Masjid Al-Fath and its surrounding mosques is a profound reminder of the deep-rooted history and significance this place holds for Islam.
