What if these walls could talk? The Masjid Hassan ibn Thabit in Medina would narrate tales of poetry and defense. It stands as a testament to Hassan ibn Thabit. He was a poet and companion of Prophet Muhammad.

Hassan ibn Thabit was born around 563 CE in Medina. He belonged to the Banu Khazraj tribe. Before Islam, Hassan traveled to Al-Hirah and Damascus. Later he settled in Medina.

After Prophet Muhammad’s arrival, Hassan embraced Islam. He then dedicated his poetic talent to defending the Prophet. Hassan ibn Thabit became Islam’s first religious poet.

Muhammad recognized Hassan’s gift. It is said that Muhammad set up a pulpit for Hassan in the mosque. From there, Hassan would recite verses against Islam’s enemies. Muhammad appreciated Hassan’s work. He believed Allah aided Hassan with the Holy Spirit. This happened as long as he defended God’s Apostle.

Hassan’s poetry offers insights into contemporary events. His writings helped document that period. He wrote over two thousand satires and elegies. Some say he wrote about 1000 poems. These poems had three to twenty lines each.

Hassan’s poems often targeted key figures. Abu Sufyan and Ibn al-Jibara were among those satirized. He also wrote about Amr bin al-Ash and Abu Jahl. Hassan used vivid comparisons. He likened his targets to monkeys and goats. Sometimes he compared them to ostriches and foxes.

Hassan ibn Thabit lived a long life. Islamic tradition says he lived for 120 years. Sixty years were before Islam. Sixty years were after his conversion. Hassan passed away in Medina. This happened between 670 and 674 during Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan’s caliphate.

The legacy of Hassan ibn Thabit continues to inspire. The Palestinian poet Salim Al-Ya’qubi adopted the pseudonym Hassan of Palestine. Imam Ahmed Raza Khan Al Hanafi Al Maturidi was also known as Hassanul Hind.

Standing here at the Masjid Hassan ibn Thabit, remember the power of words. Hassan ibn Thabit defended his beliefs with poetry. His words echoed through Medina. They still resonate today. This mosque stands as a reminder of his dedication and talent.
