Built around 622 CE Masjid Qubbah stands as a testament to early Islam. Its location in Medina holds immense significance. It’s believed to be the world’s first mosque.

Legend says Prophet Muhammad himself laid the first stone. His companions completed the structure. Different accounts exist about the site’s selection. One says it was a date-drying area. Another points to a spot where a woman tethered her donkey. Yet another intriguing tale involves Prophet Muhammad having Ali ride a camel. The mosque was built where the camel stopped.

Through the centuries Masjid Qubbah underwent many changes. Caliph Uthman expanded it in the 7th century. Later rulers including Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and al-Walid I contributed to its evolution. Renovations continued into the Ottoman era with Sultan Suleiman and Mustafa II making significant contributions. A minaret was added under Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. Sharif Abu Ya’la Ahmad ibn Hasan added a mihrab a niche showing the qibla the direction of prayer.

The 1980s saw a complete reconstruction under King Fahd. The old mosque was demolished. A new building emerged retaining traditional Islamic architecture. Its capacity soared to accommodate 20000 worshipers. Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil led the design. The present mosque boasts four minarets and 56 domes. It also includes accommodations for Imams Muezzins and a library.

A recent expansion under King Salman aims to increase the mosque’s area tenfold. This will boost its capacity to 66000 worshipers. The project involves connecting the existing mosque with covered plazas. Independent prayer areas will also be added.

Masjid Qubbah’s religious significance is profound. Praying there after performing Wudu ablution is said to equal one Umrah pilgrimage. Prophet Muhammad visited it every Saturday offering prayers. He encouraged others to do the same. The Quran mentions a mosque founded on piety a description believed to refer to Masjid Qubbah. Numerous hadiths also highlight the mosque’s spiritual importance. Masjid Qubbah stands as a living link to Islam’s earliest days a place where history faith and devotion intertwine.
