Have you ever wondered where some of Islam’s most important figures rest? You’re standing before Maqbara al-Mu’alla. It’s also known as Jannat al-Mu’alla, which means “The Most Exalted Paradise.” This cemetery, north of the Grand Mosque, holds the graves of key individuals from the Prophet Muhammad’s life. Many of his relatives were laid to rest here even before his Hijrah in 622. Among the most notable figures is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid. She was the Prophet’s first wife and a pillar of strength in the early days of Islam. Her grave, though unmarked like the others, is a place of deep reverence for Muslims. Abu Talib, the Prophet’s uncle and protector, is also said to be buried here. He played a critical role in shielding the young Muhammad from harm. Even Abdul-Muttalib, the Prophet’s grandfather, found his final resting place in Maqbara al-Mu’alla. Over the centuries, various structures and domes were erected over the graves. However, these were demolished in 1925 based on the Wahabi tradition. It prohibits shrines to prevent any form of idolatry. Today, the cemetery stands as a testament to the early history of Islam.
