Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Right here before you stands the Mosque Ben Aamar. Or rather what remains of it. For this isn’t the original structure. The first mosque in Marrakesh was built in 1071 by the Almoravid emir Yusuf ibn Tashfin. It was a simple rammed-earth building. Its exact location remains uncertain. But its legacy endures.

Ibn Tashfin’s son Ali ibn Yusuf built a grander mosque. He named it Masjid al-Siqaya the Mosque of the Fountain. It was completed between 1120 and 1132. A magnificent structure with a large courtyard. A marble fountain graced its center. The cost was staggering: nearly 60000 gold dinars. The minaret a towering presence was completed in 1132. It was the largest mosque in the Almoravid empire. The city of Marrakesh grew up around this magnificent structure. The Mosque Ben Aamar was its heart.

But time and rulers have changed the landscape. The Almohads conquered Marrakesh in 1147. They deemed the Mosque Ben Aamar’s orientation slightly off. So they either demolished it or abandoned it. They built their own grand mosque the Kutubiyya Mosque. Yet the name Ben Youssef endured. This name lived on even through subsequent reconstructions. During the Saadian dynasty around the 16th century the area saw renewed patronage. The Mosque Ben Aamar may have been rebuilt or refurbished. A madrasa a theological college was built nearby. This breathed new life into the area.

The mosque however fell into disrepair in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Alawi sultan Suleiman completely rebuilt the Mosque Ben Aamar in the early 19th century. This is the structure we see today. It bears little resemblance to its Almoravid or Almohad predecessors. Yet the name a testament to the mosque’s enduring significance remains.

The Mosque Ben Aamar continues to be one of the most important mosques in Marrakesh. The qadi the religious judge of the Mosque Ben Aamar traditionally held jurisdiction over all of Marrakesh and its surrounding areas. Sadly for us non-Muslims are not permitted inside. But its presence its story its enduring spirit are undeniable. Look at the building. Imagine the centuries of prayers whispered within its walls. Feel the echoes of history. This is the Mosque Ben Aamar. A place where faith and time intertwine.
