“The highest point in Marrakech? That’s what I want to see!” Right here, in the heart of the city, stands the Koutoubia Mosque. The Koutoubia Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Marrakech, its history, and its faith. The mosque we see today wasn’t the first one built on this site. The Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu’min, who conquered Marrakech in the 12th century, wanted a grand mosque. He demolished the existing Almoravid mosque and began construction on the first Koutoubia Mosque in 1147. But here’s a fascinating twist. He soon decided to build a second, even grander mosque right next to it. The reasons are still debated by historians, but it’s thought he felt the first mosque wasn’t aligned correctly with Mecca. The second mosque, the one we admire today, was built with a slightly altered orientation. Its minaret, a masterpiece of Almohad architecture, soars nearly 70 meters into the sky. Look closely. You can see how its design, with its decorative arches and geometric patterns, inspired other famous structures. The Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat both echo its distinctive style. The Koutoubia Mosque remains an active place of worship. While non-Muslims cannot enter, take a moment to appreciate its grandeur from afar.
