Why did Mannheim need a new park in the 1920s? The answer lies here, in the heart of Herzogenriedpark. Herzogenriedpark wasn’t always the verdant expanse you see today. It began as a plot of land, a simple “Herzogenried” or “Herrenried,” mentioned in records as early as 1369. Fast forward to 1923. The city of Mannheim acquired this land. The deal? To create a park by 1935. Mannheim’s Neckarpark had been given over to a hospital, leaving residents craving green space. Herzogenriedpark was the solution. The original 33 hectares were divided into parkland and sports areas. Between 1928 and 1932, the soil was treated, and a large festival meadow emerged. Linden alleys, chestnut trees, thousands of other trees, and shrubs transformed the area into a recreational haven. Herzogenriedpark even played a crucial role during World War II. Its open spaces were converted into vegetable gardens. Food was scarce, especially in cities. After the war, these gardens evolved into a beloved city school garden. A community garden followed in 1959, further enhancing the park’s charm. The Bundesgartenschau, Germany’s national horticultural show, graced Herzogenriedpark in 1975. This spurred further transformation. Playgrounds, sports facilities, a large pond, and even a Kneipp basin were added. A 1500 square meter animal enclosure became a major attraction, home to sheep, cattle, donkeys, and pigs. But perhaps the most stunning addition was the Rosarium. Over 100,000 roses of approximately 130 varieties bloom in this fragrant corner of Herzogenriedpark. A sun terrace offers stunning views of the rose garden and the blossoming trees. The Bundesgartenschau also brought a unique structure to Herzogenriedpark: the Multihalle. This innovative, lightweight hall boasts a shell-shaped roof made of wooden lattice and plastic foil. It housed a cafe, a beer garden, and an event space. Herzogenriedpark has continued to evolve. New sports facilities, including a boules area, basketball courts, and a fitness trail, have made it a hub for outdoor activities. A concert shell hosts various performances, and the Rosarium has been expanded and renovated. Today, Herzogenriedpark stands as a testament to the city’s vision. It offers recreation, relaxation, and a connection to nature. The park even features a new water playground, designed with input from local citizens. Herzogenriedpark truly embodies the spirit of community and the power of green spaces in urban life.
