Around 17500 years ago arrowheads were found in Vogelstang. This Mannheim district has a long and fascinating history. Vogelstang wasn’t always the large planned community we see today. Before the 1960s it was farmland mostly belonging to Käfertal farmers. They grew crops like asparagus and tobacco. Archaeological digs uncovered evidence of Frankish graves from the 19th century. More than 5000 artifacts were discovered during the construction of Vogelstang. These artifacts spanned various periods from the Paleolithic era to modern times.

A small settlement existed in Vogelstang starting in 1928. By 1940 it had approximately 40 houses. These were located in the northwest of what is now Vogelstang. They were situated along Auf der Vogelstang and Eberswalder Weg streets. The major development of Vogelstang began in the 1960s. Mannheim faced a significant housing shortage. More than 12000 families and 2000 individuals were looking for housing in 1964.

Mannheim’s mayor Ludwig Ratzel played a crucial role in Vogelstang’s planning and development. A large portion of the project was undertaken by GEWOG a subsidiary of Neue Heimat. The estimated cost was 500 million German marks. The name Vogelstang comes from an old local place name. The area’s advantageous location influenced its development. It’s close to the city center and has easy access to infrastructure. The area also lacked bothersome industries.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Vogelstang occurred on September 10 1964. The cornerstone is now embedded in a high-rise building at Geraer Ring 10. The open layout resulted in a relatively low residential density. The planned housing included social housing apartments and single-family homes. The goal was social mix similar to existing Mannheim neighborhoods. The plan was to build 1200 housing units annually. After five years around 5500 apartments could house 20000 people. For a time Vogelstang was considered the largest construction site in Southern Germany. The first residents moved into their homes on December 1 1965. By 1969 a tram line connected Vogelstang to Mannheim’s city center.

A shopping center was opened in 1969. A library and an indoor swimming pool were finished by 1974. Vogelstang never had its own independent existence. It was founded on Mannheim territory. As a result Vogelstang doesn’t have its own historic coat of arms. An emblem featuring a stylized bird was designed by Emil Kiess in 1969. The emblem is used by local clubs and appears on signs and flags. Even today Vogelstang retains its unique charm. It’s a testament to visionary urban planning and enduring community spirit.
