Have you ever heard of a water tower nicknamed “Baldy”? Right here in Seckenheim, stands the Seckenheimer Wasserturm. Locals affectionately call it “Glatzkopp,” which translates to “Baldy.” This unique landmark, built between 1909 and 1911, boasts a copper-domed top, reminiscent of a shiny bald head. The Seckenheimer Wasserturm tells a fascinating story of changing times and a family’s dedication to preserving history. Originally designed by Carl Lochbuehler and constructed by Brenzinger & Cie, the tower provided water to Seckenheim until 1956. Then Mannheim’s modern water system made the tower obsolete. It faced demolition. Luckily, the Lochbuehler family, owners of a local elevator company, stepped in and purchased the tower in 1978. They understood its significance to the community. They saved the Seckenheimer Wasserturm from destruction. The tower’s transformation began. In 1989, the top two floors were converted into event spaces to celebrate Carl Lochbuehler’s 90th birthday. A unique feature was added: a ceiling light depicting the star constellation on his birthday, July 31st. A panoramic glass elevator was installed on the exterior, making the space easily accessible. This wasn’t the only upgrade the Seckenheimer Wasserturm would see. The Lochbuehler family continued to invest in their “Baldy.” In 2002, the ground floor transformed into a unique elevator museum, showcasing the company’s and industry’s history. Between 2010 and 2012, a major restoration project took place, supported by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. This renovation marked the tower’s centennial celebration. A basement level was added, further expanding the museum. The tower regained its original paint colors. A historical water-level clock was meticulously recreated using old photographs. The Seckenheimer Wasserturm stands tall, a testament to its past and present purpose. Now, not only does it house the elevator museum, but it also serves as a beloved cultural center. The Lochbuehler family’s commitment to preserving this landmark earned them the Mannheim Prize for Monument Preservation in 2014. As you stand before the Seckenheimer Wasserturm, remember its journey from a vital water source to a cherished landmark. It’s a story of resilience, innovation, and a family’s love for their community.
