Behold the Wasserturm am alten Klärwerk Mannheim. Its sturdy brickwork whispers tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just any water tower. It stands as a silent sentinel a testament to Mannheim’s industrial past.
Before 1900 Mannheim like many cities simply dumped its wastewater into the Rhine River. Imagine the consequences. This wasn’t ideal. The situation called for change. The badische Regierung intervened. They demanded improvement. The planning for a mechanical sewage treatment plant began on the Friesenheimer Insel. This plant aimed to collect wastewater from both high and low-lying areas of Mannheim. The water was pre-cleaned before being pumped to the required height.
Construction commenced in 1904. The plant opened on June 14 1905. For its time it was considered a model of modern sanitation. A fee was levied for the use of the city’s sewers from June 1st 1905 onwards. A second pump house was added in 1906. This was for use only during floods. It helped pump excess water into the Rhine River. Even this advanced system had its limitations. The water tower itself served a crucial purpose. It held the water used for cleaning the clarification basins.
The old plant consisted of six clarification basins two pump houses this water tower and the superintendent’s house. It was functional. It was also surprisingly aesthetically pleasing. The complex boasts Norddeutsche Backsteingotik architecture with Art Nouveau elements. It’s a beautiful example of its architectural style. The main building is a two-story red brick structure covered in green glazed roof tiles. Many of these tiles are still mossy. Even today the complex is remarkably intact. This is despite sitting unused for 25 years. Now it serves as artists’ studios and exhibition space. The water tower’s original wooden cladding is long gone. It now proudly displays the Biotopia logo. Biotopia was a job creation program which occupied the site for over ten years.
The six clarification basins are impressive. They measure 48 meters long 5 meters wide and about 2 meters deep. They have a slight slope toward the inflow. The basins were connected via an inflow gallery. They could be individually shut off by valves. Wastewater was cleaned using sand traps screens and settling basins. Sludge was pumped via iron pipes about 2 kilometers long to city fields and used as fertilizer. The cleaned wastewater was channeled to the Rhine via a two-kilometer canal. It was released directly onto the riverbed to mix quickly. During epidemics like typhus and cholera the wastewater was disinfected with chlorinated lime. The Wasserturm am alten Klärwerk Mannheim.
