A majestic structure. That’s the Rosengarten. Its beauty captivates you.

The Rosengarten is more than just a building. It’s a vital part of Mannheim’s history. Built between 1900 and 1903 it was originally a city festival hall. Architect Bruno Schmitz designed it in the Art Nouveau style.

Imagine the grandeur of its original Nibelungensaal. It could hold 6000 people. One of Germany’s largest halls. Wendelin Weißheimer in 1904 praised its “huge success” in the “huge building”. Friedrich Naumann even called speaking in it a “tonic” in “Germany’s largest hall” in his 1914 book.

World War II severely damaged the Rosengarten. The historic front building with the Musensaal was externally restored. The Nibelungensaal was not rebuilt. A modern extension was built in 1974. This housed the Mozartsaal now the largest hall.

A significant expansion took place in 2006 and 2007. This nearly doubled the building’s size. Architect Andreas Schmucker son of Karl Schmucker who designed the 1974 extension oversaw the project. The expansion created a glass cube. It includes new foyers additional seminar rooms a lecture hall and conference rooms. The total height reached 23 meters.

The Rosengarten is more than just a venue. It’s hosted major events. The German Municipal Association’s annual meeting has been held there. So have company shareholder meetings like BASF’s. Political party conventions and large medical conferences like the German Society of Cardiology’s annual meeting have also taken place.

The Rosengarten is a top congress center. It’s the leading congress center for annual general meetings in Baden-Württemberg. Medical and scientific congresses are also frequently held. The “Neurowoche” organized by the German Society for Neurology is an example.

The Mozartsaal is the home of the Mannheim Music Academy’s National Theater Orchestra. The SWR’s various ensembles also perform there. World-renowned symphony orchestras use the Mozartsaal. The Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic however primarily uses the Musensaal for its Mannheim concert series.

The Rosengarten offers 44 halls. It has a total area of 22000 square meters. It can accommodate over 9000 people. The Mozartsaal alone holds up to 2300. The Musensaal holds up to 1360 people. The Stamitzsaal holds about 250. The Holzbauersaal in the underground Vario Hall is divisible and can hold up to 900. Three underground car parks provide parking for 1400 cars.

During the Corona pandemic it became a test center. Its adaptive nature is truly remarkable. A testament to its enduring significance to Mannheim. Today the Rosengarten continues to be a hub for culture business and community. It stands as a magnificent example of architectural resilience and adaptation. A true marvel that’s worth exploring.
