Sculpted from white, the METU Tree of Science Old Site stands as a testament to a vision. It was 1966 when this striking piece, designed by Tamer Başoğlu, first took root near the Eskişehir Yolu gate of Middle East Technical University’s Ankara Campus. The METU Tree of Science Old Site wasn’t always nestled among greenery. It was born into a barren landscape. A testament not just to artistic vision but to the transformative power of human effort. Kemal Kurdaş, the university president at the time, spearheaded an ambitious forestation project. Imagine, over 12 million trees planted across the METU land. This transformed the arid brown hills into a lush green expanse, making METU the largest green area around Ankara. The METU Tree of Science Old Site now stands proudly within this vibrant ecosystem, a symbol of growth and progress. The sculpture itself emerged from a competition. The second Atatürk Monument Competition, to be precise, held in 1966. Originally intended as a monument to Atatürk and his revolutions, the design was reimagined. It found its home at the university’s entrance, where it eventually became known as the “Tree of Science”. This name, suggested by Kemal Kurdaş, reflects the university’s role as a center of learning and innovation, a modern “tree of science” fostering new ways of thinking. The METU Tree of Science Old Site’s white form against the deep green backdrop of the forest isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It’s a powerful symbol of the university’s commitment to knowledge and environmental stewardship. The forest, recognized by the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, plays a vital role in mitigating Ankara’s pollution. A silent testament to the far-reaching impact of one university’s vision. The METU Tree of Science Old Site is more than just a sculpture. It’s a symbol of transformation, growth, and the enduring power of human endeavor.
