The Embassy of the Philippines in Ankara officially opened in October 1991. Bonifacio Pobre Arribas was the first resident ambassador. This act cemented the commitment of the Philippines to fostering a strong relationship with Turkey. Turkey had already established its resident embassy in Manila in 1990.
Over the years high-level visits have strengthened these bonds. Philippine President Fidel V Ramos visited Turkey in February 1995. Turkish President Süleyman Demirel reciprocated with a visit to the Philippines in February 1999. These visits underscore the importance both nations place on their relationship.
The embassy plays a crucial role in various aspects of Philippines-Turkey relations. These include economic, cultural, and security cooperation. It supports the resolution of the Moro conflict. It also participates in the Independent Decommissioning Body. This body oversees the decommissioning of forces in the Bangsamoro region.
Cultural exchange thrives too. In December 2024 the Philippine Embassy in Ankara celebrated 75 years of Philippines-Türkiye relations. They organized a Friendship Concert. The event featured Philippine National Artist for Music, Mr Ryan Cayabyab. Local artists and the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality City Orchestra joined him.
The Embassy also actively promotes Filipino culture. At Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, they shared Filipino Christmas traditions. They displayed cultural items, traditional holiday decorations, and served Filipino food. The Filipino community even performed the Sinulog festival dance.
The Embassy of the Philippines doesn’t just celebrate culture. It also provides essential services to Filipinos in Turkey. As of 2013, around 5000 Filipinos resided in Turkey. They often work as fishermen and domestic helpers. The embassy offers assistance to nationals. It also provides consular services. This includes translation and interpretation.
