Shattered glass. The acrid smell of smoke. The 2 Aralık Anıtı stands as a stark reminder of a day etched in ODTÜ’s history. 2 Aralık 1977. A day of resistance, a day of tragedy. The 2 Aralık Anıtı isn’t just a monument. It’s a scar. It’s a testament to the struggle for a democratic university. A nine-month struggle against an oppressive regime. Students, faculty, workers, and families united against the appointment of Hasan Tan as rector. Their resistance culminated in the forced departure of the fascists on December 2nd, 1977. But victory was tinged with sorrow. The fascists, positioned in the upper floors of the Rectorate building, hurled a bomb into the crowd. Gunfire ripped through the air. Over fifty students and workers were injured. İbrahim Baloğlu, a student whose spirit resonated with the ideals of ODTÜ, was critically wounded. He succumbed to his injuries 14 days later. The 2 Aralık Anıtı marks the spot where İbrahim Baloğlu fell. It was erected a year later, in 1978, as a symbol of the unwavering spirit of resistance. The monument serves as a focal point. A place where the ODTÜ community gathers every year to remember the struggle and honor the memory of İbrahim Baloğlu and all those lost in the fight for a democratic university. The 2 Aralık Anıtı stands as a silent witness. It whispers the stories of resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring pursuit of academic freedom. It reminds us that the fight for democracy and freedom is a continuous process. And that the memory of those who fought must never be forgotten.
