“Buzzing” with excitement, the Bee Unique Statue stands before us. Manchester hosted a public art exhibition named Bee in the City one summer. This free event showcased over 80 giant 3-D honey bee sculptures. These bees dotted the city.

Manchester City Council supported the project. Wild in Art organized it. Professional, emerging and amateur artists decorated the bee sculptures. The project launched at the Town Hall. Jodie Silverman painted the first bee sculpture. You could see it at the Central Library then. It was located on the staircase to the right of the main entrance.

The bees were on display for nine weeks. They stood near Manchester’s landmarks and cultural gems. An inclusive learning program ran alongside the sculpture trail. It allowed children and young people to explore the city through creativity.

Once the trail ended, the bees were auctioned. The auction raised money for the We Love MCR charity. This charity improves the lives of Manchester people.

In fact, 101 giant bee sculptures took over Manchester’s streets. Each bee was designed by local artists. They celebrated Manchester’s unique buzz. They highlighted its industrial heritage and vibrant music scene. Locals and visitors searched for the bees. They learned more about the city along the way.

Bee lovers had a final chance to see the bees. A Farewell Weekend took place at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre. Afterward, the bees were auctioned to raise money for We Love MCR.

The bee emblem has represented Manchester’s “worker bee” ethos for over 150 years. It symbolizes energy, industry and creativity. The giant bee installation made art accessible. It cultivated cultural identity. It promoted health, happiness and wellbeing.

Some bee designs stood out. The Golden Bee reflected the city’s culture. The Disco Bee highlighted the plight of bees needing protection. The Abstract Bee incorporated the word “Love”. It summed up the friendly nature of Manchester people. The Homeless Bee represented homelessness. It reminded people to help those in need. The Doodle Bee depicted the city in the artist’s recognizable style. The Map Bee showed Manchester’s rapid growth. The Yellow Bee represented a commitment to a sustainable future.

Bee in the City attracted over a million visitors. It generated an estimated £20m for Manchester’s economy. It also raised around £300k for local charities. The project built on Manchester’s worker bee heraldry. It symbolized the city’s industrious spirit. It also showed solidarity after the arena bombing.

Some bees referenced Manchester heritage. Others showcased everything from sundaes to Picasso. Bee in the City also featured a summer events program. This included weekenders and Feel Good Fridays. There was also a children’s reading challenge. The Bee Unique Statue is a reminder of this unique event. It is a symbol of Manchester’s spirit.
