Picture the scene a bustling hub of entertainment. That was Belle Vue Manchester. For almost 150 years Belle Vue was a major entertainment destination in the UK. Belle Vue wasn’t just a zoo it was so much more.

Belle Vue Zoological Gardens opened in 1836. It started small. John Jennison a former silk weaver had a vision. He transformed his family’s land into a popular attraction. His simple aviary and brewhouse soon evolved. Belle Vue grew into a sprawling 165-acre complex.

The zoo was a star attraction. Elephants monkeys and camels amazed visitors. But Belle Vue had more than animals. In the 1870s a small amusements area appeared. This developed into a full-blown amusement park. It included thrilling rides rollercoasters and exciting shows. Belle Vue was truly the Showground of the World.

The King’s Hall opened in 1910. This magnificent hall hosted countless concerts. Major musical acts performed there over the years. Belle Vue attracted two million visitors annually at its peak. People came from all over the UK for the amazing experience.

Belle Vue had its share of drama. A major fire in 1958 devastated much of the park. Luckily many animals survived. Despite the setback Belle Vue soldiered on. The zoo eventually closed in 1977 due to mounting debts. The amusement park lingered for a few more years closing in 1980. The land was cleared by 1987.

Today little remains of Belle Vue’s grand past. Yet the memories endure. The stories of elephants racing greyhounds spectacular shows and legendary concerts continue to captivate. The Belle Vue legacy lives on in the hearts of those who remember. It reminds us of a time when entertainment and excitement were found in one magical place Belle Vue Manchester.
