Can you hear the whispers of the past? Here at the Stretford War Memorial, the stories of sacrifice and resilience echo through time. The Stretford War Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the 580 men from Stretford who gave their lives during the First World War. Unveiled on August 25, 1923, by the Earl of Derby, then Secretary of State for War, the Stretford War Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war on the community. The memorial itself is a striking cenotaph, standing 24 feet tall and 11 feet wide at its base. Constructed from Darley Dale stone, it features a three-stepped base, a plinth, a cenotaph, a pediment, and a lion couchant. The names of the fallen are etched onto bronze plaques affixed to a curved gritstone wall behind the cenotaph. Originally, standard lamps topped the wall and low railings enclosed the memorial, but these are no longer present. The memorial’s inscriptions are simple yet powerful. One side reads, “They died that we might live,” while the other bears the inscription, “In memory of the heroic dead.” Behind the Stretford War Memorial, Lombardy poplars stand tall, their presence adding a touch of serenity to the solemn site. Interestingly, a trust fund was also established, intended to create a District Nursing Service, a testament to the community’s desire to find some good amidst the immense loss. The Stretford War Memorial is more than just a monument. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Stretford, a place where the memory of the fallen is carefully preserved and honored. As you stand here, take a moment to reflect on their sacrifice, and remember the words etched upon the stone: “They died that we might live.”
