Opened in 1934 by King George V himself, Manchester Central Library stands before you as a grand beacon of knowledge. This isn’t just any library. It’s the second largest public lending library in all of Britain, surpassed only by the Library of Birmingham. King George V, at the opening ceremony, proudly proclaimed this very building as “the largest library in this country provided by a local authority.” The Manchester Central Library’s design, a striking rotunda with a columned portico, was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Architect E. Vincent Harris cleverly incorporated elements of neoclassical style, creating a structure that seamlessly blends the ancient with the modern. Look up and you’ll see a pitched, leaded roof that, from this vantage point, gives the illusion of a dome. The true dome, however, is hidden within, visible only from inside the Great Hall. Inside, the Great Hall is a marvel, its original furniture still in place, a testament to Harris’s vision. Around the dome’s rim, a powerful inscription from the Book of Proverbs speaks to the importance of wisdom and understanding. The library holds over one million books within its walls. Imagine the stories contained within! Originally, these books were housed in vast steel stacks, spanning an incredible 35 miles of shelving. These stacks, environmentally controlled to protect the precious volumes, were accessible only to library staff. After the extensive renovations completed in 2014, many of these books are now on public shelves, readily available for all to enjoy. Manchester Central Library also houses some incredible special collections. The Gaskell Collection celebrates the works of Elizabeth Gaskell, a literary giant who lived and worked right here in Manchester. The Henry Watson Music Library boasts one of the largest public collections of sheet music, a treasure trove for music lovers. This library even houses the Newman Flower Collection of Handel Manuscripts. This collection includes some real surprises. Among them are several previously unknown violin sonatas by Vivaldi, signed by the composer himself, now known as The Manchester Sonatas. These musical gems, hidden within the walls of Manchester Central Library, are a testament to the power of libraries to preserve and share our cultural heritage.
