The Media City Footbridge is a swing-mechanism footbridge. It elegantly connects MediaCityUK with the Imperial War Museum North. The footbridge facilitates pedestrian traffic. It offers stunning views and a unique experience as it moves.
Completed in 2011, the Media City Footbridge is an asymmetric cable-stayed swing bridge. It was designed by Gifford and WilkinsonEyre. The bridge is an engineering marvel, costing approximately £11 million.
Did you know the Media City Footbridge weighs 450 tonnes? It has two spans measuring 65 and 18 metres. The Media City Footbridge can swing through 71 degrees. This creates a 48-metre navigation channel for vessels. The bridge’s deck is an orthotropic steel box. This design ensures strength and stability.
The Media City Footbridge is supported by eight tapered steel fanned masts. These masts converge at their base. They are centred on a reinforced concrete caisson foundation. This foundation is 13 metres in diameter. Above the water, it is 7.3 metres in diameter. Balfour Beatty constructed the bridge. Rowecord Engineering fabricated the steel.
The swing bridge design was chosen to maintain public navigation rights. While ships might not frequent the Port of Manchester as often now, the bridge can accommodate any potential ship movements. The Media City Footbridge ensures that waterway access remains open.
The main pivoting span is 65 metres long. A shorter, 18-metre back span contains concrete. This acts as a counterweight. It balances the main span during opening. Pedestrians walk on an epoxy aggregate coating on the deck. This provides a safe and durable surface.

The spans were slid into position. Temporary works supported the masts. Cables were attached and tensioned. Only then were the temporary supports removed.
