In the heart of Manchester, spanning the River Irwell, stands Victoria Bridge. A silent sentinel witnessing the ebb and flow of city life since 1839. Its namesake, Queen Victoria, wouldn’t actually grace its sandstone arch until 1851. But the bridge’s story begins long before its royal christening. Let’s journey back to the 14th century. Imagine a much different crossing: the Salford Old Bridge, a medieval structure of three Gothic arches, standing where Victoria Bridge now stands. This older bridge marked the site of an ancient ford, a place where the willow trees dipped their branches into the Irwell, giving Salford its name – Sealhford, the “ford by the willows”. Salford Old Bridge had its own tales to tell. It even boasted a small chapel built on its central pier. This chapel, later repurposed as a jail, stood as a peculiar testament to the bridge’s long history. But by the 19th century, progress demanded a new passage. The old bridge, deemed too narrow for the burgeoning city’s traffic, met its end in 1837. Its demolition was a dramatic affair, with the keystone removal sending a cascade of masonry plunging into the river. From these watery ruins, Victoria Bridge arose. Construction began in 1838, and within a year, the new bridge opened, costing around £20,800. The bridge was a grand affair upon its opening. Soldiers marched across to the tune of “God Save the Queen”, while the clang of anvils from nearby forges mimicked celebratory cannon fire. Today, Victoria Bridge continues to connect Salford and Manchester. Its single semi-elliptical arch, crafted from sandstone, stretches approximately 100 feet across the Irwell. Look closely, and you’ll find the names of Charles Carrington, the bridgemaster, and John Gannon, the contractor, etched into the keystones. A testament to their work. Victoria Bridge stands as more than just a crossing. It’s a link between centuries, a symbol of Manchester’s growth, and a quiet observer of the city’s vibrant story.
