Unassuming yet imposing, the Spetsbunkern rises here. It is a giant concrete cigar in Malmö harbor. This cone-shaped relic stands as a stark reminder of World War II.

Around 1940, Kockums shipyard faced a challenge. The waterlogged ground made underground shelters impossible. The Spetsbunkern was their answer. It was designed to protect 150 workers from air raids. Ironically, Sweden remained untouched. The bunker never saw action.

The Spetsbunkern is unique in Sweden. Similar structures were common in wartime Germany. These were called Winkeltürme or Spitzbunker. Leo Winkel designed them. His design made the Spetsbunkern both functional and creative.

Its tall, narrow shape was intentional. Enemy bombers would have a hard time hitting it. Even a direct hit would glance off its surface. The metal-reinforced pointed top added to its resilience.

Today vines cover the Spetsbunkern. It stands as a stoic sentinel. The interior holds secrets. A spiral staircase and platforms fill it. A central shaft once held a winch.

Kockums built the Spetsbunkern on their own initiative. The shipyard was a vital part of Sweden’s defense industry. It was a likely target for air raids. The Spetsbunkern was meant to offer workers some protection.

The location complicated things. Västra Hamnen was built on infill. Digging underground was not an option. Kockums looked to Germany for inspiration. Leo Winkel’s Spitzbunker design was perfect. Bombs would glance off the pointed structure. This would protect those inside.

The Spetsbunkern could house 100 to 150 workers. It never served its intended purpose. It remains an industrial monument.

Some wonder how the Spetsbunkern is anchored. After all, it had to withstand powerful blasts. The exterior is covered in Virginia creeper.

Inside, a massive spiral staircase is embedded in the walls. At the top, a heavy iron cone protects the structure. Small openings allowed those inside to monitor the situation.

Skånska Cementgjuteriet likely provided the concrete. Kockums themselves probably designed the top cone. A winch at the top would lift essential supplies.

Sadly, the Spetsbunkern leaks. This poses a long-term threat to its preservation. Despite this, the Spetsbunkern stands tall. It is a unique reminder of a turbulent time. It is a testament to human ingenuity in the face of conflict. It shows how a difficult problem can be solved in a creative way.
