Have you ever wondered how ships navigate the treacherous waters of the Öresund strait? This narrow waterway, connecting the Baltic Sea to the North Sea, has been a crucial trade route for centuries. But the journey was not always smooth sailing. The Flintrännan is a vital fairway through the Öresund. It runs southeast of the Danish island of Saltholm and west of the Swedish coast near Malmö. Today, the channel is straight and deep, with a minimum depth of 8.4 meters. But in the past, the Flintrännan was far more challenging.

Imagine a time before modern navigation technology, when ships relied heavily on the stars and currents. The route through the Flintrännan was a perilous one, particularly for large vessels. The channel was once crooked and shallow, with treacherous shoals and reefs lurking just beneath the surface. These hazards posed a constant threat to ships, making the journey a risky undertaking.

The Flintrännan was not properly surveyed until 1873. Before that, ships had to rely on their own navigational skills and knowledge passed down through generations of mariners. The Swedish navigation authority, the Sjöfartsverket, took on the task of improving the Flintrännan, and it began with the use of lightships.

These large, brightly lit vessels anchored around the channel’s most dangerous locations, emitting a constant glow that served as a warning to passing ships. These lightships were crucial in improving the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic through the Öresund. These early navigation aids helped ships to navigate the treacherous waters of the Flintrännan with greater ease and safety.

But in the 1960s, they were replaced by an innovative solution: “Kassunfyrar”. In modern Swedish, “kassa” refers to a box or case, the “fyrar” are the lights in the “kassa”. So, “Kassunfyrar” are boxed lighthouses, anchored to the seabed with their lights above the water. Their boxes contained batteries for their lights, allowing them to operate without needing to be supplied from land.

These “Kassunfyrar” were built in the 1960s, and made a great difference, allowing ships to travel through the Flintrännan safely. The Flintrännan has since been straightened and deepened, with modern technology. Nowadays, the Flintrännan is a beacon of progress and economic prosperity in the region.
