Wind Wall. A name as fluid as the very air it captures. Here at Malmö Live, this mesmerizing artwork doesn’t just stand; it breathes. Imagine a canvas, 3 meters high and stretching 18 meters long. But instead of paint, thousands of small polycarbonate flaps dance in a symphony orchestrated by the wind. The Wind Wall isn’t static. It’s a living, breathing piece of art, constantly changing its expression with every gust and breeze. Unveiled in December 2016, the Wind Wall is more than just an aesthetic marvel. It’s a testament to the power of natural forces. It was designed by the artist group Fundament, composed of Petter Thörne, Jens Skaarup, and Josh Morrison. Commissioned by the city of Malmö, the Wind Wall had a clear mission: to illuminate and honor the invisible hand of nature, to define this public space, and to create a human scale within this sprawling urban landscape. The team behind the Wind Wall included Fredrik Dahlberg, the engineer from Sigma who ensured its stability and resilience against Malmö’s winds. RG Mekaniska fabricated the steel structure, the sturdy skeleton upon which the artwork rests. Kanor Plast, a company based in Vellinge, meticulously crafted the 3,000 blue and fire-yellow plastic flaps that ripple and flutter in the wind. The budget for this ambitious project was around 2 million kronor. This included everything from the groundwork and lighting to the artistic fees and the intricate construction process.
