Could a political party’s headquarters hold more stories than a history book? Here at the İYİ Parti Genel Merkezi in Ankara, the answer is a resounding yes. This building, located on 2120. Cadde, isn’t just a hub of political activity. It’s a living testament to the dynamism and ever-shifting landscape of Turkish politics. The İYİ Parti, meaning “Good Party,” was born on October 25, 2017. Its founder, Meral Akşener, a prominent figure in Turkish politics, envisioned a party rooted in nationalist, Kemalist, and conservative values. The party’s very symbol, a sun with eight rays, became a point of contention, with legal challenges arising from its alleged resemblance to other political campaigns. This, however, did little to deter the İYİ Parti’s rise. The İYİ Parti Genel Merkezi witnessed a whirlwind of activity in the lead-up to the 2018 elections. Akşener emerged as the party’s presidential candidate. The party joined forces with other opposition parties to form the Nation Alliance, securing 43 seats in parliament. The İYİ Parti Genel Merkezi became the epicenter of strategic planning and coalition building. The party further cemented its presence in Turkish politics during the 2019 municipal elections. Although the İYİ Parti itself didn’t win any major mayoral seats, their alliance with the CHP led to victories in key cities like Istanbul and Ankara. The political landscape continued to shift. In a dramatic turn of events in 2023, Akşener announced the İYİ Parti’s withdrawal from the Nation Alliance, only to rejoin days later following public pressure and a new agreement. Through it all, the İYİ Parti Genel Merkezi remained the steadfast base of operations. The İYİ Parti’s influence extends beyond electoral politics. Akşener has championed women’s rights and advocated for policies like increased female workforce participation and stricter measures against violence against women. The party has also promoted pro-Europeanism and supported Turkey’s NATO membership. After the 2024 local elections and a significant loss of votes, Akşener decided to step down as leader. Her preferred successor, Müsavat Dervişoğlu, was elected as the new leader at a party congress. This building, the İYİ Parti Genel Merkezi, continues to witness the unfolding story of the party. It stands as a symbol of political ambition, strategic alliances, and the ongoing pursuit of a “good” Turkey.
