“The Burning House” they call it. A fitting name don’t you think?
La Casa Encendida stands before us a testament to Madrid’s vibrant cultural heart. It wasn’t always a centre for art and social engagement. This impressive building originally served as the headquarters of a bank Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Madrid. Known then as “El Monte” or “The Pawnshop” it held a different kind of wealth.
The year was 1911. The first stone was laid. The architect Fernando Arbós y Tremanti envisioned a building unlike any other bank in the area. Its symmetrical facade a blend of brick and granite was strikingly modern. A central courtyard tied it all together.
It took until 1913 to be completed. Many years later in December of 2002 La Casa Encendida was reborn. The Fundacion Montemadrid transformed this historical landmark into the cultural hub we see today. They even secured permission from the heirs of the poet Luis Rosales to use the evocative name from his book.
More than just a building La Casa Encendida is a living space. It hosts cutting-edge art exhibitions. Workshops focus on environmental issues and social justice. The cultural program is diverse.
