Behold the Rana de la fortuna. This isn’t just any frog. It’s a bronze behemoth a three-and-a-half-meter testament to luck and Madrid’s spirit.
The Rana de la fortuna stands proudly on Paseo de Recoletos. It’s a gift. A thank you from the Casino Gran Madrid. They presented it to the city in 2014. Ninety years had passed since Madrid’s last casino closed. The casino’s return was a momentous occasion.
The frog itself is symbolic. In Feng Shui frogs represent fortune and chance. Perfectly fitting for a casino’s gift. But there’s more to this amphibian. Its massive legs are two and a half meters wide. People can actually walk under them.
Artist Eladio de Mora dEmo created the Rana. He’s known for his giant gummy bears. He takes everyday objects and reimagines them. He imbues them with new meaning.
The frog’s belly is a treasure trove. Thirty-four lucky symbols are etched onto its bronze skin. From numbers like 7 and 13 to an Egyptian scarab. There’s even a four-leaf clover and a peace sign. Currency symbols are included too. The dollar the euro and the pound. A truly global celebration of luck.
The frog’s greenish-blue patina is special too. Juan Manuel Gonzalez an expert in patinas created it. This hue is considered lucky as well. The sculpture is beautifully lit at night. Embedded lights illuminate the frog making it even more magical.
The inauguration was quite the event. Journalist Carme Chaparro and actor Paco Leon attended. Paco even kissed the frog a prince’s gesture.
So look closely at the Rana de la fortuna. It’s a story in bronze a symbol of Madrid’s resilience and its embrace of luck and fortune. More than just a statue it’s a charming story about Madrid. A symbol of the city’s revival. And a reminder to embrace the unexpected turns of life.
