“Matadero Municipal de Madrid” the plaque proclaims. Its weathered steel gleams faintly in the Madrid sun. This unassuming plaque tells a story. A story of industry ingenuity and urban transformation.

This isn’t just a plaque. It’s a portal to the past. It marks the site of a once-bustling municipal slaughterhouse. A place where the rhythm of life was dictated by the bleating of sheep and the lowing of cattle. Architect Luis Bellido Gonzalez designed this complex. He envisioned a space that was not only efficient but also adhered to the highest standards of hygiene. His travels across Europe informed the design. He incorporated ideas from cutting-edge German facilities.

The result was remarkable. Forty-eight buildings initially. Later expanded to sixty-four. They stood in perfect orthogonal order. Well-ventilated. Each with a specific function. The design was strictly rational. It emphasized both hygiene and efficiency.

But the style held a distinctly Spanish flavour. The buildings were constructed of sturdy brick and stone. Ornamental details reflected the eclectic historicism of the era. The neo-Mudejar style prevalent in many of the structures represented a distinctly Spanish and traditional style. A fascinating contrast with the advanced metallic pillars and roofing elements. Even reinforced concrete was used in certain areas for extra durability.

The plaque itself is a work of art. Created by MRIO Arquitectos Asociados and West 8. Its design complements the landscape architecture of the Madrid Rio project. Made of two matte-finish stainless steel plates. They are fastened together and encased in a perpendicular band of the same material. The top plate displays the incised text. The bottom plate features a serigraphed reproduction of a period map. The primary buildings are highlighted with cut-out pieces of one-centimeter thick steel.

This plaque’s position is carefully considered. It offers a panoramic view of the Matadero complex. Its location near a pedestrian footbridge connecting both banks of the Manzanares River is strategic. A second plaque stands on the opposite bank. It offers further details of the Matadero’s current cultural use.

The plaque’s text gives a glimpse into the past. The Matadero operated for almost seven decades from its inauguration in 1925 until its closure in 1996. It replaced an older slaughterhouse located near the Puerta de Toledo. Built in the Dehesa de Arganzuela. The building was inspired by German models. Its various naves and buildings showcase the neo-Mudejar style typical of industrial architecture at the turn of the 20th century.

Today the Matadero is a vibrant cultural center. But this plaque serves as a reminder of its roots. A reminder of the hard work and innovation that shaped this remarkable space. It stands as a testament to the city’s history. A reminder of its transformation and its enduring spirit. A quiet yet powerful witness to Madrid’s evolution.
