A polygonal giant it stands tall. This is the Silo de Hortaleza.

Picture this majestic seven-story tower. It rises 20 meters high. It’s a unique landmark in Madrid’s Hortaleza district. The Silo de Hortaleza wasn’t always a cultural center. It was built in 1928 by an unknown architect. Back then it was part of a larger agricultural-industrial complex. This complex belonged to the Dukes of Frías. Later it was owned by the lawyer Pedro Tobar. He transformed the estate into an innovative agricultural operation. The complex included a barn and a dovecote. Sadly these structures were demolished in the 1970s. Only the Silo de Hortaleza survived. The storks that once perched on the barn and dovecote are gone now. They announced the arrival of spring to the neighbors. A charming memory.

The Silo de Hortaleza is a testament to history. It’s made of prefabricated concrete blocks. This was a pioneering construction method in Spain. The exterior is reinforced by iron bands. These bands divide the tower’s height. They break up the monotony of the smooth surface. The Silo de Hortaleza is more than just a building. Today it houses exhibitions and cultural events. There’s even a reading room. The top floor offers a breathtaking viewing platform. From there you can see the Cuatro Torres Business Area Barajas and the surrounding mountains. It’s a 360-degree panoramic view. A truly magnificent sight.

The Silo de Hortaleza has a rich past. It was once a grain silo. It later served as storage for firewood. Its transformation into a cultural center is a remarkable feat of preservation. The entrance gate to the original estate is now displayed in the park. It bears the inscription “Finca de la Salud Reedificada en 1894”. A lasting tribute to a bygone era.

The Silo de Hortaleza is a hidden gem. It stands as a symbol of Hortaleza’s history. It’s a place where the past and present beautifully intertwine. The Silo de Hortaleza awaits. Come and explore its fascinating story.
