Did you know that the Fuente de Cibeles isn’t just a pretty fountain? It is one of Madrid’s most iconic symbols. Here at Plaza de Cibeles, we find ourselves before a neoclassical marvel.

Commissioned in 1780, the Fuente de Cibeles was designed by Ventura Rodríguez. The stunning white marble was sourced from Montesclaros. Francisco Gutiérrez sculpted the goddess. Roberto Michel crafted the lions.

The Fuente de Cibeles depicts Cybele. She is a Phrygian earth and fertility deity. Crowned with a mural crown, she rides a chariot. Two lions pull her chariot. These lions represent Atalanta and Hippomenes.

Originally, the fountain stood elsewhere. In 1895, it was moved to this very spot and given its current orientation. The Fuente de Cibeles has a maximum water capacity of 278 cubic meters.

Beyond its beauty, the Fuente de Cibeles is a gathering place. Real Madrid’s supporters and players celebrate their victories here. They drape the statue with the team’s flag and scarf. The Spain national football team also celebrates here. However, celebrations have taken their toll. In 1994, the goddess lost a hand. Then again in 2002.

Interestingly, Madrid’s Fuente de Cibeles isn’t unique. There is a replica in Mexico City. It was inaugurated in 1980.

The Plaza de Cibeles itself was once named Plaza de Madrid. In 1900, it was briefly renamed Plaza de Castelar. Soon after it was replaced by its current name.

Look around at the prominent buildings that frame the plaza. There is the Bank of Spain Building. We also have the Palacio de Buenavista. Don’t miss the Palace of Linares. Finally, there is the Cybele Palace.

The Cybele Palace is now the seat of the Madrid City Council. Formerly, it was the Palace of Communication.

So, the Fuente de Cibeles is more than just a fountain. It is a symbol of Madrid. It is a place of celebration. It is a testament to the city’s rich history and artistic heritage.
