Gazing up at the ornate facade of the Real Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes, one might mistake its simple exterior for a common church. But step inside, and you’ll find a hidden jewel. The Real Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes is a feast for the eyes. It’s a unique baroque masterpiece in the heart of Madrid. Originally, this church wasn’t German at all. In the early 17th century, King Felipe III commissioned it as San Antonio de los Portugueses. It served Portuguese migrants when Portugal was under Spanish rule. The accompanying hospital and hostel underscored Spain’s then-control over Portugal. However, the political landscape shifted with Portugal’s independence in 1640. The church’s purpose became uncertain. Queen Mariana de Austria, wife of Felipe IV, rededicated the space to German Catholics. They had accompanied Mariana of Neoburg, wife of Carlos II, to Madrid. This marked the church’s transition to San Antonio de los Alemanes. The Real Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes wasn’t built overnight. Construction spanned from 1624 to 1632. The Jesuit Pedro Sánchez drafted the plans. The original facade remains, featuring a stone sculpture of Saint Anthony by the Portuguese artist Manuel de Pereira. Atop the church sits Madrid’s tallest spire. Inside, a breathtaking 1,500 square meters of frescoes unfold. In 1662, Juan Carreño and Francisco Rizzi began painting the frescoes based on sketches by artists invited to the court by Diego Velázquez. The central fresco depicts Saint Anthony receiving the Child from the Virgin. Surrounding them are eight Spanish and Portuguese saints, each with scenes from their lives painted beneath. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1690, a flood damaged the original frescoes. Lucas Jordán undertook the restoration, adding baroque details. He transformed the columns into Solomonic and the capitals into Ionic. He also enhanced the vegetative and architectural decorations. He even painted the previously bare walls to resemble tapestries, depicting scenes from Saint Anthony’s life and miracles. Today, the Real Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes remains under the stewardship of the Hermandad del Refugio. King Felipe V entrusted them with the church and its assets in 1702. This group continues its charitable work, providing meals to those in need, a modern echo of the church’s original mission of refuge and piety. So, next time you pass the unassuming exterior of Real Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes, remember the rich history hidden within. It’s a story of changing empires, artistic brilliance, and enduring compassion.
