“Taipa Leisure Area by the Sea,” a child squealed, pointing towards Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa. The Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa is more than just a park. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of leisure, recreation, and community spirit. Located along the picturesque coastline of Taipa, from the East Asian Games Avenue to the East Asian Games Roundabout and the Ocean Avenue, it’s a testament to Macau’s commitment to creating spaces where life is celebrated.
The story of Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa begins in 2008, with a vision to transform a 360,000 square foot plot of land near the Sai Van Bridge’s Taipa entrance into a recreational haven. The first phase of the Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa’s cycle path opened in February 2013. Bicycle rentals were also introduced, allowing visitors to explore the 1250-meter path that hugs the coastline. The path is thoughtfully designed, with the cycle lane measuring two meters wide and the pedestrian path along the coast a spacious three meters. Small pavilions, benches, and washing facilities dot the area, providing respite and convenience. Parking spaces for 48 cars and 110 motorcycles cater to those arriving by their own vehicles. Over 400 trees and 30,000 shrubs paint the area in vibrant green hues, creating a refreshing escape from the city buzz.
The second phase, completed in May 2013, added another 1000 meters to the cycle path and pedestrian walkway, extending the Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa towards the Ocean Gardens near the Sai Van Bridge entrance. A dedicated children’s play area, spanning 682 square meters, and three fishing areas further enhanced its appeal. More pavilions, benches, and tables provided additional spaces for relaxation. The third phase, initiated in mid-2015, extended the cycle path another 1000 meters towards the Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, adding a scenic viewing platform and more pavilions. This phase meticulously incorporated safety features. A 0.4-meter high stone base lines the pedestrian path nearest the shore, along with safety signs. The existing metal railings along the cycle path were preserved. A circular building with restrooms, a security room, and a bicycle rental point was also added. The open space on the northeast side of the expanded area, featuring a circular stepped viewing platform, was retained, ensuring unobstructed views of the coastline. Approximately 2100 square meters of Portuguese cobblestone pavement, in white, red, and black patterns, further embellished the area. Additional parking for 29 cars and 20 motorcycles cater to increasing visitor numbers. The Zona de Lazer da Marginal da Taipa has blossomed into a vibrant community hub, offering a little something for everyone.
