Even the CEO of Sands downplayed its potential. Gamblers complained about the triangular gaming floors, citing bad feng shui. They felt the layout disrupted the “flow path” and impacted their luck. The fountain outside also malfunctioned frequently. For a while, it seemed the skeptics were right. Then, A-Max, a Hong Kong junket conglomerate, partnered with Casino Altira. They offered high-rolling gamblers in exchange for a 1.25% commission. Casino Altira’s VIP market share skyrocketed from 6% to 24%. Monthly turnover surged past $8 billion. This shift forced other casinos to increase their commission rates, reshaping the market. Casino Altira, however, remains a VIP haven. Floors 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 17, and 37 cater to junkets. About 25 different companies operate there. A small first-floor casino with 20 tables welcomes non-VIPs. Minimum bets are steep, often starting at $300. Baccarat and Blackjack are the main games. Previously, they offered five games. However, they discontinued Caribbean Stud, Roulette, and Sic Bo to concentrate on Baccarat. A high-limit area on the upper first floor houses ten Baccarat tables. Minimum bets here climb to $500, $1000, and $2000. Mocha Slots manages the casino’s slot machines. Their hall offers 99 machines with denominations from ten cents to five dollars. Electronic Roulette and Baccarat are also available for $5 and $30. Casino Altira also boasts the tallest building in Taipa, standing at 160 meters. While the casino caters to high rollers, the attached hotel offers five-star service. Casino Altira has garnered several accolades. These include the best five-star hotel at the Asia Pacific Hotel awards. It also received recognition as the best five-star hotel and spa by Forbes Travel Guide in 2011 and 2012. Despite these achievements, its limited 216 rooms, primarily occupied by junket guests, make weekend stays a challenge.
