What if I told you that Nanping Village in Macau is more than just an ancient settlement? It is a living film set. Nanping is a place where history and cinema intertwine. Today we will explore Nanping Village. We will discover its hidden stories.

Nanping Village has a history spanning over 1100 years. Originally known as Ye Village it was later renamed after Nanping Mountain. Most villagers were from the Ye family.

But it is its more recent history that truly captivates. Nanping Village has served as the backdrop for several films. This earned it the nickname China’s Film Village.

Let’s talk about some specific films. Zhang Yimou’s 1989 tragedy Ju Dou was filmed here. Many scenes were shot inside the village’s Xuzhi Hall. This hall is over 530 years old. Inside, you can see props and behind-the-scenes photos from the film.

Next door is the Ming dynasty Kuiguang Hall. Parts of Ang Lee’s 1999 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed here. Imagine the actors gliding through these ancient halls. Feel the echoes of their performances.

But Nanping Village offers more than just cinematic connections. It also has impressive rural views. Nanping Mountain provides a beautiful green backdrop. You can see big trees, flowing streams, and farming fields. Visit in March or April to see ripe flowers. September offers golden paddy fields.

The architecture in Nanping Village is well-preserved. Many buildings were originally built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Strolling through these antique structures is like stepping back in time.

Ancestral halls are a highlight of Nanping Village. There are eight old, well-maintained halls. They offer a glimpse into the ancestral culture of feudal society. Each family had its own temple to worship ancestors. These halls were also places where elders exercised clan power. They even served as courts for moral issues. Some halls had attached schools for clansmen’s children. Women were not allowed to enter except on their wedding days.

Clan Ye’s Ancestral Hall is also called Xu Zhi Hall. The Ye family used it for celebrations, sacrifices, and implementing family law. The hall covers 800 square meters. Two large black marble stone drums stand at the gate. They symbolize family power. Inside, 54 big camphor tree pillars support the building. The pillars, beams, and decorations show how powerful and rich the Ye family once was.

Clan Ye’s Branch Ancestral Hall worships Ye Wengui. He was the four-generation ancestor of the Ye family. In front of the main door are two stone mirrors with fine carvings. Like the stone drums, the mirrors symbolize family status.

Woodcarving Hall was built during the Qing Dynasty. It is over 100 years old. The owner was a rich businessman. The hall is full of refined woodcarvings. There are flowers, birds, insects, and figures from operas. The carvings are delicate and multifarious.

Bingling Pavilion is a small residence built in the mid-Qing dynasty. It has a history of more than 200 years. The owner opened a bank in Wuhu. The gateway is in the shape of a Chinese character. It symbolizes the official residence.

Among the 36 wells in Nanping Village, Sanyuan Well is the most interesting. Sanyuan represents the first place in the Chinese imperial examination system. It shows the wish for great achievement in study. The well has three holes. Three families can lift water at the same time.

Nanping Village offers a peaceful escape. It is a place where you can experience rural life. You can even try farming work with a local family. Other activities include DIY Batik and cycling to Guanlu Village.

Nanping Village is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty. It is a place where you can lose yourself in the past. You can also appreciate the simple pleasures of rural life. As we conclude our visit, remember Nanping. It is not just a village. It is a living, breathing testament to China’s rich heritage.
