SCHUBZ began in 1989. It started as a school biology center. Rolf Harald Krause founded it. It was in the Grundschule on Kreideberg in Lüneburg. The goal was to offer programs for school classes. The city and district of Lüneburg financially supported it. In 1991, a support association formed. It acquired additional funds. In 1996, the center moved to a Leuphana University building. It became the Schulbiologie und Umweltbildungszentrum. About 5,000 to 6,000 students participated then. Since 2014, it has been located in the former Anna-Vogeley-Heim. In 2016, SCHUBZ took over the Wildgehege in Ochtmissen. They created the Arche-Park there. In 2018, the center had 796 sustainable development projects. These involved over 14,725 children and teens.

Today Frank Corleis leads SCHUBZ. The center has teachers. They support pedagogical work. About 35 staff, interns and volunteers contribute. They complete a voluntary ecological year. SCHUBZ promotes sustainable development. It is an example of environmental education. It shapes a better tomorrow.
