Ready to explore one of Lüneburg’s oldest neighborhoods? This is Ochtmissen. It lies just northwest of Lüneburg. Ochtmissen boasts a history stretching back over a thousand years.

Ochtmissen holds a special place in Lüneburg’s story. Imagine Ochtmissen as an independent village. That was its reality until 1974. A municipal reform changed everything. Ochtmissen became part of Lüneburg.

Let’s step back to 1717. Ochtmissen was involved in a dispute with Vögelsen. The argument was about a load of sod. Ochtmissen won the case.

The heart of Ochtmissen is its local council. Nine members represent the area. Local elections determine these seats every five years. Jens-Peter Schultz from the SPD currently serves as mayor.

Ochtmissen also focuses on education. The “Schule am Sandberg” serves around 80 students. A kindergarten is located in the town center. It is on Hotmann-Weg. The road was previously named Werner-Jansen-Weg. This changed because of Werner Jansen’s Nazi past. The Lüneburg Cultural Committee decided on the renaming.

Ochtmissen provides great infrastructure. The A 39 motorway is easily accessible via the Lüneburg-Nord junction. The Lehrte–Hamburg-Harburg railway line runs parallel to the motorway. The closest train stations are in Bardowick and Lüneburg. There was once a station in Ochtmissen itself. It was on the Wittenberge–Buchholz line. This line is now closed.

Living in Ochtmissen means enjoying short distances. Shops, organic stores and doctors are easily accessible. Its location “Unter den Eichen” is very popular. The Lüneburg city center is close. The A39 provides quick access to the surrounding area.

Ochtmissen combines village charm with nature. Several schools are within walking or cycling distance. The local football club and the natural swimming pool in Bardowick are popular leisure options. Fresh bread rolls and vegetables are available in the village café and farm shop. The bus stop is a 3-minute walk from the park district. The city bus takes only 15 minutes to the Lüneburg city center.
