“Taxes, duties, whatever it is you want to call it, no one wants to pay them,” goes a saying. But here in Reppenstedt, the townsfolk took avoiding taxes to a whole new level. Reppenstedt, our charming municipality, serves as the administrative heart of the Samtgemeinde Gellersen within the district of Lüneburg, Lower Saxony.
Do you see those moats and mounds? That is the Alte Lüneburger Landwehr. In the 14th century, this defense system ensured merchants paid their dues in Lüneburg. Lüneburg was big on the old salt trade routes. Watchtowers kept a close eye on anyone trying to sneak past. Imagine trying to circumvent the city.
Today, you don’t have to worry about paying taxes as you explore this medieval tax enforcement area. Instead, enjoy Reppenstedt’s charm. The population of Reppenstedt was only 75 after World War II. Today, the population has jumped to around 7,000.
Take a walk around the famed Lüneburg Heath that surrounds Reppenstedt. It is quite large. The Lüneburg Heath has 35 towns and districts. You might even get lucky. You might discover traces of Bronze Age Man. Someone found a lance at a prehistoric grave from around 5,000 years ago.
While you’re here, be sure to explore the surrounding natural beauty. Zelt-Berg is a hill nearby. Wahls-Berg is another. Sankt Nicolaier Fuhren is a forest worth visiting.
Although not as ancient as the Bronze Age finds, Hof Lübbers is the oldest house in Reppenstedt. It was built in 1710. It still holds historical significance for us.
Don’t miss the annual Krimifest. It is a thriller festival at the end of October. Also, experience the Weihnachtsmarkt. This is the Christmas Market at the end of November. Just don’t think you are going to get away without paying any taxes. Reppenstedt’s history reminds us that some things are unavoidable.
