The military government helped by clearing out a school building. Former prisoners of war had been housed there.
The university underwent several transformations. It became an independent institution in 1978. Then it was renamed Universität Lüneburg in 1989. A significant milestone was reached in 2003. The university became a foundation under public law. This gave it more autonomy and responsibility.
The university’s campus is unique. It’s located on the site of the former Scharnhorst-Kaserne. This was a barracks built by the Wehrmacht in the 1930s. The transformation of this military site into a university campus is remarkable.
